Two months Basic Yoga –Vedanta course, study and Practice of yoga and Vedanta at Yoga Vedanta forest academy (YVFA) Rishikesh under the divine Life society, Sivananda Ashram Rishikesh. The great spiritual master and the founder of Divine life society, Swami Sivananda laid the foundation of the academy.

About Academy

Yoga Vedanta Forest Academy was started in 1948 by H.H Swami Sivananda Saraswati. The Academy is having the experienced Professors and dedicated associated team member. The Basic Yoga Vedanta course is an Inter – disciplinary institution for study and practice of Yoga, Vedanta and India culture.

The Academy focuses in Yoga, Meditation, Philosophy, Upanishads, Bhagwat Gita and other spiritual subjects. The academy is consecutively organizing regular Vedanta program since 3rd July, 1948. The Academy have maintained their ethics, discipline, standard as per the ashram policy and guidelines and offers well-crafted traditional, devotional yoga and Vedanta courses thrice a year for two months each residential program (March – April, May- June, Sep – Oct)

The class size and number of seats are 40 students in a batch. If the preference is to practice yoga, Vedanta, Philosophy, Upanishad and Indian culture in a best spiritual environment, this academy may be the right choice for you. Preferably a graduate and English as the primary language of instruction are required for understanding of the subjects and prior to enrolling in the course.


The academy is facing the Holy Ganges at Ram Jhula, and close to the nature forest. The registrar office is situated at P.O Sivananda Nagar -249192 Distt. Tehri Garhwal and is within the Ashram’s premises at International Yoga city Rishikesh – India. The Academy is well connected with the main Badrinath National Highway, Ganges, Ram Jhula, swargh ashram, and is in the radius of 3 km distant from Main city Rishikesh, ISBT Bus stand, Railway station, 24 Kilometer from Haridwar, 22 Kilometer from the Jolly grant airport and 45 Kilometer from the Uttarakhand state capital Dehradun. The Academy is surrounded by the forest. The place can be better for people inclined towards meditation & Yoga, seeking for spiritual Knowledge.


Student’s are provided sharing room or dormitory with study table and cupboard. All the rooms are Non A/c but spacious and cross air ventilated.  The student have to stay on the accommodation provided by the academy no separate arrangements for accommodation. The rooms are located on the ground and first floor and a dormitory.

Please, note that all the students have to stay in the Academy. And have to report one day prior to the course start date. Though there is no extra stay and extra meals charge but the student have to notify the school in advance, about their arrival and departure date at the registrar office earlier.

Rooms are available on double occupancy basis only and the school won’t provide any separate rooms. The academy have the have 24 hrs. Hot water and drinking Filter water facility.

Any kind of intoxication, drugs, smoking and other dissipating habits are strictly prohibited in the ashram. The selected candidates are likely to live an austere life and are not permitted to get along or live with any of his family member or relative in the ashram and must psychologically and physically sound to stand the rigors of the course.

Yoga Hall

Academy Yoga hall is wide, spacious located on the ground floor. Yoga hall is non A.C. but airy and well ventilated situated near to green forest. The Yoga Hall can accommodate maximum 40 -50 practicing students at a time. However from Time to time Practice of Yoga are done in an open ventilated place.

Dining Hall

The dining hall is ventilated and located at the First and Second floor and maximum 250 -500 peoples can dine at the same time in a batch. 


The student have to manage their own laundry. In case those students who want to avail paid laundry service can contact the registrar office or reception. Students can use the front balcony to dry up the washed clothes.


Strictly vegetarian food will be providedA divine prayer in Sanskrit is chanted before every meal. Daily food menu is fixed by the dining hall department and the meals varieties are prepared and offered accordingly. The food prepared is Satvic, vegetarian, less spicy and quite flavorful on the principles of Ayurveda cooking. The school serves three meals with an unlimited supply of various dal, chapatti, rice and vegetables. 

Breakfast: After the Morning meditation, the class is adjourn for breakfast .The breakfast is served with any  item Parantha, Poha, Halwa, idli and sambhar, upma, Vada, etc. along with the tea. Only in Ekadashi day tea is served in the morning and rice is excluded from meal.

Lunch: The lunch is served with dal, rice, vegetables, chapati, or any of the mention item like curd, vada, rasam, puri, paneer, soup, Laddu, buttermilk, kheer, or any other sweet dish.

Dinner: Rice, Dal, chapatti, vegetable or along with any of the item like curd, buttermilk, puri, or sweet dish.

The food menu may modify from time to time.

Class Size

The class size is usually 40 students in a batch.

SELECTION PROCESS: The student are requested to submit the Application before the prescribed time of starting course date by mentioning:

  • 500 words the individual’s spiritual background.
  • Theirs’s Aspirations and Future plans.
  • Medical certificate of fitness.
  • Photocopy of educational certificates.

In case the candidate has hidden the facts and is found lacking in the above aspects, his selection will be cancelled and asked to return. Also, throughout the period of the course, outsider presence without the school permission is considered objectionable for any reason, his admission will be invalid.

Course Details

Courses Conducted

The yoga Vedanta forest academy (YVFA) will be leading regular course in yoga – Vedanta on a systematic basis. At present, the academy conducts 3 courses in a year, each of two months duration. The details are as follows:

The initial course starts from of March to April month.

Next course starts from of May to June month.

Finally, the Third course starts from September to October month.

(The course details are tentative and can be changed as and when necessary)

The Lectures and classes will be for six days in a week, from Monday to Saturday, including special lectures, group discussions, homework and reflection by students.

Number of seats: 40 per batch

Age Group: Minimum 20 years – Maximum 65 years.

Qualification: The candidate must be at least minimum graduate and should have sound Knowledge of English, deep spiritual ambition and sound fitness are required.

The medium of Instruction: All the medium of instruction is in English.


  1. History of Indian philosophy: The Vedas, The Upanishads, Jainism, Buddhism, Nyaya, Vaiseshika, Samkhya, Yoga, Vedanta (sankara, Ramanujan, Madhava).
  2. History of western philosophy: Socrates (the concept of virtue ), Plato ( Doctrine of ideas), Aristotle (Metaphysics and causation), Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, Kant (critique of reason, Ethical Norms).

III. Philosophy of Swami Sivananda: Life –sketch of Swami Sivananda, The Universal Prayer, Twenty important spiritual instructions, Yoga synthesis of swami Sivananda, The Science of seven cultures or Sadhana Tattva.

  1. Studies in Religious consciousness: Teaching of Divine Life society, World religion, Ethical moral development, Lord Buddha, Spiritual Transformation, a Vedic way of Life.
  2. Study of the Bhagavad-Gita: The Despondency of Arjuna, The three Yogas: – Karma, Bhakti and Jnana, Daivi Sampat and Asuri Sampat, The concept of scadhrma, Nature of Sthitaprajna, God, world and soul. 
  3. Study of Upanishads.

VII.   Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras.

VIII. Narada Bhakti Sutras.

  1. Asana, Pranayama and Meditation.
  2. Karma Yoga (Practical)

The above syllabus is provisional, for understanding for students. It may modify, Student will be pre-informed depending upon the situations and experiences.

Final Examination: written and viva voice tests will be held at the end of the course. The certificate will be awarded on successful completion of the course, along with a Jnana Prasad.

Day 1 Arrive in Rishikesh, India

Opening day is for orientation. After the arrival at the ashram reception, students are welcomed to stay in ashram. The day is filled up with the divine spiritual environment by opening ceremony of Saraswati Pooja (in traditional Hindu style) and visiting Dattatriya temple. You will be introduced to the academy teachers and other members of the academy.

Day 2 -59 Basic Yoga Vedanta classes

Enjoy an orientation of Academy’s at sivananda Ashram. You’ll quickly discover that Academy isn’t just home to the student, but also to some of the most beautiful spiritual vibrant place at the foot of the Himalaya’s in the picturesque town of Rishikesh, known as Yoga capital of the world, at weekend explore the holy place with its fantastic Ganges location. Although the class schedule is pretty tight s. The classes are fixed and regular classes are conducted. Major subjects covered during these days are philosophy, Bhagwat gita, Patanjali sutra, Yoga, pranayama and meditation and Mantra chanting, There will off on Sundays.

Day 60Closing ceremony

The final day of the course is celebrated in traditional style of closing ceremony. The students are awarded certificates and Janna Prasad, then after they are free to proceed to their destination.

He was born and brought up in the spiritual environment of mantra chanting, in her family from her childhood.
